UPRN finder
Enter a postcode to see every property in it as a point on a map, each with its Unique Property Reference Number (UPRN). Or enter a UPRN to see where it is.
House numbers and street names are not shown. They come from licensed address data, so use the map to pick out the building.
What a UPRN is
A Unique Property Reference Number is a number of up to 12 digits that identifies one addressable place in Great Britain: a house, a flat, a shop, a plot of land or even a bus shelter. Councils assign them, and a UPRN stays the same for the life of the property, even when its address changes. That makes it a reliable way to match records about the same home across councils, energy certificates, Land Registry data and your own systems.
Finding your property on the map
Every point is one UPRN. A detached house usually has a single point. A block of flats has one point for each flat, often stacked on the same spot, plus sometimes one for the building itself. Where a home has an energy performance certificate, the list shows its type, floor area and rating, which helps tell neighbouring homes apart.
Where the data comes from
Postcodes come from the ONS UPRN Directory and locations from OS Open UPRN. Both are published under the Open Government Licence. Property details come from the open fields of the domestic EPC register for England and Wales, so Scottish properties show a location and postcode but no EPC details.
Need the full address?
The UPRN lookup API returns the full address for a UPRN, or the UPRN for an address and postcode, as JSON. Use it when you need to match addresses to UPRNs in bulk or inside your own product. For forms, the address autocomplete API returns the UPRN of every address a user selects.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the UPRN for my property?
Enter your postcode, then find your building on the map. Click its point to see the UPRN, and use the copy button to copy it. For flats, several UPRNs share one point, and the EPC details in the list help you tell them apart.
Why can I not see house numbers or street names?
Address text in Great Britain comes from licensed Ordnance Survey and Royal Mail data. This free finder only uses open data, which links UPRNs to postcodes and map locations but not to house numbers. The paid UPRN lookup API returns full addresses.
Is a UPRN the same as a title number?
No. A UPRN identifies an addressable place and is assigned by the council. A title number identifies a registered piece of land at HM Land Registry or Registers of Scotland. One title can cover several UPRNs, such as a block of flats.
Does it cover Scotland and Northern Ireland?
It covers England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland UPRNs are not in the open datasets this tool uses. EPC details are shown for England and Wales only.
How up to date is it?
The postcode data is refreshed from each ONS UPRN Directory release, which comes out every month or two. Brand new homes can take a few months to appear.
Free lookups are limited per visitor to keep the service fast for everyone. For bulk or automated use, use the API.
